Fire Fighter Lacey Paige

Since I wanted to create a fictional book that looked at all the aspects of the emergency services and not just the ones you see on television, I decided to create the character of Lacey Paige. I created her character with the purpose of showing fire fighting from a different angle, that of the emergency vehicle driver or EVD. When people typically think of fire fighters they visualize the ones the rush into the burning building to rescue people or put out the fire. The character of Lacey Paige gives readers the opportunity to view fire fighting from the perspective of those who often remain outside the burning building.

Truck One

While the engine company is conducting their responsibilities the truck arrives with a four person company: an officer, two emergency vehicle drivers (EVD's) and a fire fighter. When they first arrive they set up at least one ladder to every floor of the building. They also open every window from the top down. The EVD's are responsible for getting the large ladder on the top of the truck extended to the roof. From there they cut a hole in the roof to release smoke and gas. If the entrance is locked then the truck company will open the door for the engine crew. After these responsibilities are finished the truck company will enter the building and perform a search for any victims.

In the book and series there is a volunteer fire fighter that becomes an EVD on Truck One Fire Fighter Lacey Paige. You can see her profile on the right.
